Dr. Ann Heerens’ leadership
Ann Heerens, M.D., MBA, Practice Medical Director, absolutely loves her role of taking care of babies and making a difference in children’s and families' lives. “I feel like no matter how hard I am working, or however many hours I put in, I can walk away saying ‘you know, I really made a difference today, and it was worth it.’”
Dr. Heerens joined the MEDNAX team right out of fellowship in 2002 in Roanoke, Virginia, and now serves as the Practice Medical Director in Richmond and the Medical Market Advisor for the north region of Virginia. She strives to ensure her team members feel they have weight in their positions. All voices are heard equally, with the team implementing processes that enforce this. Dr. Heerens has been instrumental in setting up the new Harrisonburg practice for that same level of success.
A growing team
Staffing plays a critical role in setting up the practice at Sentara RMH Medical Center for success. Dr. Heerens says her strategy for building this new team comes from the positive experiences she had as a new physician with the Medical Director in Roanoke. She tells us how lucky she was that so early in her career, he was there to guide her and make everyone on the team feel valued and heard. These are the kinds of methods she wants to bring into the Harrisonburg practice, making sure her physicians recognize their job is to build upon the structures and dynamics that are already in place. “The doctors and nurses already at the hospital all work beautifully together,” Dr. Heerens says. “We’re not going to change the things that work. Our job is to take care of the babies and provide the best possible care.” Her goal is to provide the structure and support for new team members to take the practice to the next level.

Virginia is divided into three regions: the eastern shore, Central Virginia, and Western Virginia. From mountain biking to hiking to kayaking, Virginia has amazing activities available for the whole family. One of Dr. Heerens favorite spots to bring her family is Wintergreen Resort, only a short drive from Harrisonburg, Richmond, and Lynchburg.

At her home practice, Dr. Heerens’ team often turns their educational events into social events. They have a journal club, where clinical articles are discussed over food and drink. Uniquely, the physicians also get together to make their schedules. This is done over dinner, which provides a chance to socialize outside of work. Since they support five hospitals, there isn’t always an opportunity to interact and creating the schedule together creates a strong bond among the group as they can better understand the other team members’ needs. It facilitates a sense of mutual trust and consideration as they look for balance for every individual.
