Mednax expands pediatric subspecialty care offering in Texas

Child Neurology Consultants of Austin (CNCA), a leading pediatric neurology and rheumatology practice, recently joined the Mednax™ family. This exciting affiliation expands our vast pediatric subspecialty presence in Texas to include highly specialized neurology care that will provide patients regionally and nationally with greater and more expedited access to in-person and remote neurological treatment.

Jeffrey Kane, M.D., will lead the group as practice medical director.

“Pediatric health care in America is incredibly fragmented,” said Dr. Kane. “There are children’s hospitals and medical schools that provide state-of-the-art care for very complicated diseases in very isolated spots around the country, but there are very few organizations that can bridge the gap and deliver high-quality care to kids, and Mednax is the foremost group that fits in that space. It fits very well with our mission, which is to expand child neurology services to kids who have trouble accessing that care.”

About the practice

CNCA cares for more than 100 patients daily across its three office locations in Austin and is affiliated with all area hospitals, including Dell Children’s Medical Center, St. David’s Healthcare and Texas Children’s Hospital. Comprised of 12 physicians and five advanced nurse practitioners, CNCA is a well-established practice that provides comprehensive pediatric neurology services for a broad array of neurological conditions impacting children from birth through young adulthood, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, cerebral palsy, concussion, epilepsy, metabolic disorders, migraines, Tourette syndrome and other neurological conditions. The practice also offers outpatient infusion services for patients requiring intravenous treatment.

In addition, the group provides several subspecialty programs for epilepsy, muscular dystrophy, neonatal neurology, sports neurology and tuberous sclerosis. Together, CNCA and Mednax will further develop the epilepsy and neonatal neurology programs for local, regional and national expansion.

“Through our partnership with Mednax, we hope to do more telemedicine and remote neurology programs to reach children who don’t currently have ready access to these services and develop subspecialty programs that bring a level of care that is traditionally only found in academic medical centers to a much wider group of children around the country,” said Dr. Kane. “We feel like it is the natural evolution for us—we have built this locally, and Mednax is the platform that allows us to scale this to a regional and ultimately national level where we can help bring advanced child neurology services to a much greater number of children.”

As a foremost expert in pediatric epilepsy, CNCA’s epilepsy program provides diagnosis and management of seizure disorders in children. It will soon expand with the launch of TeleNeurology and TeleEEG services to provide families in rural and underserved communities across the country with improved access to care.

The neonatal neurology program identifies early cognitive impairment in both term and preterm infants. The early identification of cognitive issues in infants leads to improved neurological outcomes and reduces long-term disability, lowering the cost of future care. “Mednax, through their maternal-fetal and neonatal clinicians, touches one in four children born in America,” said Dr. Kane. “Many of those children don’t have access to child neurologists, and we want to partner with Mednax to create a program where we can provide neurology consult services to all of those kids. I’m very excited about the possibilities with this.”

Total care in Texas

The addition of CNCA adds to the services Pediatrix Medical Group® provides in Texas through its network of affiliated physicians across multiple specialties, including maternal-fetal medicine; OB hospitalist; neonatology; newborn nursery; newborn hearing screen; developmental pediatrics; and pediatric cardiology, critical care, hospitalist, infectious disease, neurology, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, orthopedics, surgery and urology. The group provides care at 17 hospital partners in Austin.

“Our partnership with CNCA continues to demonstrate our ongoing focus on providing a complete suite of pediatric subspecialty services for our patients,” said James D. Swift, M.D., executive vice president and chief development officer for Mednax. “CNCA’s commitment to high-quality tertiary neurologic care for infants and children is an important addition to our services in Austin and more importantly in the state of Texas, giving us a foundation to expand these specialties nationally and provide another key clinical service as we look to provide a platform in pediatric population health management.”

Welcome to the Mednax family, CNCA! We look forward to continued success in providing the highest quality pediatric care to the Austin community and beyond.
