Join Us for the Next NEO Grand Rounds on the Risks and Complications Associated with Acute Kidney Injury in the Preterm Infant

Pediatrix® Medical Group’s commitment to clinical and research excellence is evidenced by our comprehensive educational and professional development opportunities offered online and during live sessions.

The Pediatrix® Neonatology Grand Rounds series addresses pertinent controversial issues that influence the clinical practice of newborn medicine. Webinars are held on the first Wednesday of every month from 4 to 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

On Sept. 4, Jonathan Swanson, M.D., will address the issue of neonatal acute kidney injury (AKI). Appreciation of neonatal AKI and its associated complications and long-term issues is not well understood in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This presentation will provide evidence for diagnosis and treatment of AKI, as well as generate ideas to improve the care of NICU patients with AKI.

Topics covered will include:

  • How to identify patients who are at high risk of developing neonatal acute kidney injury and the role AKI plays in short and long-term patient outcomes.
  • Ways of implementing workflow changes to improve the care of NICU patients with regard to kidney health.

Jonathan Swanson, M.D., MSc, MBA, is Professor of Pediatrics and the Chief Quality Officer for Children's Services and the Division Director for the Division of Neonatology at the University of Virginia (UVA) Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dr. Swanson completed medical school at the University of Rochester and subsequently completed both his pediatric residency and neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship at UVA. After completing his fellowship, he worked in northern New Jersey until returning to UVA in 2011. He obtained his master’s degree in health care quality and safety in 2013 from Thomas Jefferson University and in business administration from the University of Arizona in 2023. His passion and research focus on necrotizing enterocolitis, neonatal nutrition and neonatal acute kidney injury as well as quality improvement methodology and cost-effective care.
