Join Us for the Next NEO Grand Rounds on Growth Assessment in the NICU

Pediatrix’s commitment to clinical and research excellence is evidenced by our comprehensive educational and professional development opportunities offered online or during live sessions.

The Pediatrix® Neonatology Grand Rounds series addresses pertinent controversial issues that influence the clinical practice of newborn medicine. Webinars are held on the first Wednesday of every month from 4 to 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

On June 5, Fu-Sheng Chou, M.D., Ph.D., FAAP, a board-certified neonatologist with Southern California Permanente Medical Group, will explore “Growth Assessment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This webinar will introduce an innovative growth reference tool that describes preterm infant growth under contemporary neonatal practice. The new growth reference tool may provide a means to change growth assessment in the NICU to provide better understanding of the impact of neonatal morbidity and nutrition on growth.

Learning objectives for the session include:

  • Describe the different growth reference tools for preterm infants, and the limitations associated with intrauterine growth charts.
  • Describe the basic principles in the development of the Postnatal Growth Charts for Preterm Infants.
  • Demonstrate descriptive, predictive and prescriptive use of the Postnatal Growth Charts for Preterm Infants.

Dr. Chou is a board-certified neonatologist with Southern California Permanente Medical Group and clinical associate professor at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine. As a clinician-researcher, Dr. Chou aims to apply data science, machine learning and advanced statistical techniques to improve neonatal care and outcomes. Using these techniques, he hopes to illuminate the enigma of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and identify a better clinical definition that will encompass a more precise long-term health prognostication for premature infants. In addition to BPD research, Dr. Chou leads a project in collaboration with Pediatrix Medical Group to develop cutting-edge, longitudinal postnatal growth charts for premature infants. He also collaborates with clinician investigators at Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Chou graduated from National Taiwan University with his medical degree, and from the University of Cincinnati with a Ph.D. in Cancer and Cell Biology. He completed his pediatric residency in Kansas City and his neonatology fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Chou is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Society for Pediatric Research.
