OB Challenges 2018 | April 5-7, 2018 | Glendale, Arizona

1. Focus on the latest perinatal knowledge about a critical topic theme.

OB Challenges remains under the continued leadership of Phoenix Perinatal Associates (PPA) and conference director Curtis Cook, MD, MFM specialist and Associate Director at PPA. With a 30-year history, PPA has earned a reputation as one of the largest and most recognized maternal-fetal medicine groups in the country. The practice partners with neonatologists, developmental pediatricians and pediatric cardiologists in the communities it serves to ensure seamless, integrated care for mother, baby and family, before, during and after pregnancy.

This year’s OB Challenges Conference covers the essential theme of Reducing Maternal Morbidity and Mortality. “Despite health care advances in the United States, our country saw nearly a 27 percent increase in maternal morbidity. The World Health Organization suggests a high percentage of those deaths may have been preventable,” said Dr. Cook. “OB Challenges 2018 will take a hard look at this trend to identifying protocols for risk assessment and early intervention, as well as post event analysis of fatal and near fatal maternal events.”

Course Objectives

  • Develop a strategy for reducing maternal morbidity and mortality at your hospital.
  • Identify quality and safety metrics that can be applied at your institution.
  • Introduce new strategies for management of postpartum hemorrhage.
  • Recognize and treat acute hypertension in a timely and effective manner.
  • Understand the importance of influenza vaccination, screening and treatment.
  • Identify the ultrasound findings consistent with placenta accreta.
  • Update management of cesarean delivery to reduce maternal morbidity.
  • Appreciate the importance of team debriefing after sentinel events.
  • Diagnose and initiate goal-directed therapy for maternal sepsis.
  • Recognize and treat diabetic ketoacidosis.

2. Learn from a diverse group of faculty who are leaders in their fields.

A unique and exciting element of OB Challenges is the diversity of its faculty, which includes both experienced experts and residents from the University of Arizona, College of Medicine.

“This conference brings faculty from all backgrounds of perinatal care. Some are longtime experts who lead this field in policy, in education, in research and also in practice,” said Dr. Cook. “However, we also invite young influencers still in training. We appreciate the unique, on-the-ground perspective our new doctors bring to this event, introducing us to the next generation in maternal-fetal medicine trailblazers.”

2018 faculty include:

Haywood Brown, the F. Bayard Carter Professor at Duke University’s Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and also current President of ACOG (2017-2018)
Gary Dildy, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston
Elliott Main, Medical Director for the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative at Stanford University

3. Earn CME and CNE credits.

The MEDNAX Center for Research, Education, Quality and Safety is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Full participation at OB Challenges 2018 includes up to:

Continuing Medical Education: maximum of 20.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™
Continuing Nursing Education: 20.0 continuing nursing education (CNE) contact hours

4. The Nursing Symposium is an added benefit for all.

As the conference celebrates its 35th year, the Nursing Symposium — moderated by Suzanne Blaine, CNM — marks its 10th anniversary. This section of the conference is open to all attendees, with CNE and CME credit available (nursing contact hours and AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™). The Nursing Symposium is held on Friday, April 6.

“This part of the event has become a staple of OB Challenges. While it was developed as a forum specifically for nurses to discuss bedside care and management, it has been embraced by all of our conference attendees. It is now a popular afternoon of sessions focused on integrated care and a team approach to ensure we work together to provide the best outcomes for our patients,” said Dr. Cook.
